B1 compared to B2

HI all,

I am considering buying a L1 Model 1s, but nor if I should get the B1 or B2 bass. I have been using a Compact for the past three years and sometimes I need a little lower end. I am solo, play rhythm guitar, and sing all genres. I use backing tracks with Unreal Book and an Airturn pedal. I have several gigs coming up that are large about 200-300, so that’s why I am considering the purchase, but not sure of which bass model would work well for me.

For " sometimes I need a little lower end. I am solo, play rhythm guitar, and sing all genres", unless you’re heavily into low-end percussion, I think that you’ll be happy with one B1 or possibly two.


It may seem odd that I would mention two B1s, but I would certainly prefer to manage a two B1s (on those rare occasions where a single B1 might not do). The B2 weighs in at about 45 pounds (compared to two B1s at closer to 52 for both). For loading in and out of a vehicle, I’m much happier with a couple of smaller 26 pound units than a single big one.

If you want to try a B2 then you can get the it from Bose and if (within 45 days) it doesn’t suit you, you can send it back. See details at the end of this post.

The other approach is to get the B1 and if that doesn’t seem like enough of a step up, send it back and get the B2.

Having said all that - from what you’ve said, I think you’ll be just fine with a B1.

Thanks for the feedback. I was concerned over the weight. I don’t want to lug a 45 pounder anywhere. I appreciate it. I think I’ll move toward the B1.

I have an L1 Model II, with two B1s. For me, having two B1s is more practical. As a solo, fingerstyle acoustic guitar/vocal act, a single B1 is fine for most clubs. For big outdoor gigs, I simply add the other B1 for a little more headroom. Used B1s are cheap now, and I always have just what I need, without hauling a 45 lb. piece of equipment.

Our Model2 with 2B1's work just fine! I feel a B2 would be overkill for what you doing. Save your pocket book along with your back!

I have an L1M2/B2/T1, heard a guy the other night with the L1M2 with two B1s and my one B2, blew him away, just my humble opinion.

We love our 2B1's and so does my back. They do a fine job and take a back seat to no B2. My not so humble opinion.

Hi Bill,

I have not used a B2 so I have no comment on one’s performance. Do you happen to have any recordings of yourself or your duo using the B2? I’m curious If there are holes it might fill with vocal and acoustic guitar use, not that I think I’m missing anything by using B1s, but maybe I am.

I think this is a matter of personal preference to your own ear and comfort zone of your performances. I was fortunate enough to be able to try both 2 B1’s and 1 B2 for four gigs before purchase. Also fortunately 1 was outside gig, three were indoors. For my fingerstyle and presentation the B2 simply blew the 2 B1’s out of the water. But that’s just for ME and MY desired results. Others may differ. I found that getting this absolutely perfect sound with the punch and warmth was worth my dolly, the 45 lbs, and the better $100.00 covered case I found for it. I’ll carry a bit of extra weight to get the stellar sound I demand of my shows.
