I just purchased my first condenser mic, a Nuemann KMS 105. So I take it out of the box, hook it to the mic cable, turn on my ToneMatch, turn the trim down, give it a test as loud as I could with my voice as I’m turning up the trim and wal-la, no sound or signal.
I checked to make sure the phantom power switch is on, yep.
I unhooked the mic and put my old mic in to check the cable and was able to get a signal so that ruled out the cable.
I reconnected the KMS 105 and tried again with the phantom switch on, and still no signal or sound.
Before I send the mic back I thought I’d ask you if you had any other suggestions?
Thanks.
Hi Coot
Do you get a green signal light when you adjust the trim with the KMS-105 ?
As a follow up, I’ve found that the mic does work. My set up is as follows:
I use a digitech vocalist and run my mic through it with a line out of the vocalist to the Tonematch CH1. when I do that the KMS 105 does not work. It does work however when by pass the vocalist and take the mic straight to the Tonematch using the onboard phantom power.
My sense is I will not be able to use the vocalist because it only has a 4/-10 switch which matches the vocalist line input level to the output level of the Tonematch. And that worked when I was not using a condenser mic like the 105. But according to the vocalist manual a cardoid, 1kOhm-impedance type microphone is preferred when using the vocalist. So it appears I may have to send the mic back anyway, because I rely heavily on the Digitech vocalist for background harmonies. Bummer
Hi Coot
Why not run your KMS-105 into the T1 and then run from the out of channel 1 into the digitech vocalist and then run the out of the digitech vocalist into the input of the T1 channel 2 to control the volume of your harmmoies.
Hope this helps Todd
In most states - you cannot return a microphone.
In response to Todd. No green signal with the first try, do get a green signal and sound without using the vocalist. I plan to try your suggestion this morning sometime and will let you know what happens. Really appreciate all the responses. Coot
In response to SunDog. True in most cases, however I asked Full Compass if I could return it and they said okay. There are very few vendors that will allow it for health reasons. I guess I’m pretty healthy. Coot
Thanks to Todd the set up he suggested works the vocalist and the KMS 105. Todd I see you play keyboards, so here is a related question. I play the Korg PA2X arranger. It has a Helicon Vocal sytstem on board. To be honest I can’t get the mic sound I want from it and like the one I get from the ToneMatch better. I wonder if I could figure out how to do the same approach you suggested with the digitech vocalist but this time use the harmonies from my keyboard instead of the digitech? Thanks.
Just thought that I’d chime in here. I own a digitech vocalist and a KMS105. The only way that I can get it to work perfectly (no distortion) is to hook it up as Todd suggests.
My other mics work fine going into the digitech first, but not the KMS105.
For What It’s Worth!
You are right about the other mics working with the digitech vocalist. And mine is very old (11 yrs)so I expect it’s nearing it’s last voice pretty soon. I do have a helicon harmonizer in my keyboard, I guess I better get to experimenting. Thanks for chiming in.
Hi Coot
Im glad that worked out for you. Just for the record . I am a guitar player not a keyboardest and I do have a TC helicon Voiceworks that I like better than my Digitech vocalist. I dont have a clue how to tell you to hook that up to your keyboard. Maybe someone else can chime in and give you a hand.
Glad I could help Todd
