Considering Selling Old Bose Systems for F1 812

I'm thinking of selling my Compact and Classic and going to a single F1 812 with subwoofer. I don't gig as much as I used to and I'd like to clear up some space and simplify things. Most my gigging these days is in a duo.

Any thoughts on this?

Hi Wayne,

I can almost guarantee that you will miss the wide horizontal dispersion of the Compact and the Classic.  I've tried to use the F1 Model 812 in place of my Compact and it was tricky at times to get things positioned so I could hear it well and share the sound with the audience. That's because the horizontal dispersion is 100 degrees compared to the Compact at 180 degrees, and the Classic perhaps a little less.

Don't get me wrong here - I enjoy the F1 Model 812  with the F1 Subwoofer, but to get the same kind of horizontal coverage, you need two of them (unless you can put one in a corner and aim it diagonally across a room).

Also, you'll probably need a stage monitor. The F1 Model 812 wasn't designed to be placed behind the performers. You can do it at low volume, but it's not the same experience that you're used to with the Classic.

I think you'll also miss the incredible portability of the Compact. I've kept mine in the trunk of the car for years. It's always there for an impromptu gig or a walk-on set. And it's saved a few shows (for others) when their gear let them down, or they needed a little more sound.

PS - To others reading along: We don't do Buy & Sell posts here. So Wayne's comments are hypothetical, not an offer to sell.

Aha! Not aware of all of this. Valuable information and thanks.

Hi Wayne,

Take a look at a Model 1S or a Model II. Both of these will give you the same kind of horizontal dispersion as the Compact with the bass response of the Classic. And they are both joyfully lighter to move around. The Power Stand is smaller and weighs about 25 pounds (about the same as the Compact Power Stand).

The Model II gives you more overall coverage than the Model 1S. The Model 1S has fewer options for bass expansion.

If you play on elevated stages, then the Model II is probably a better choice. Please check out this article: Model 1S and Model II Vertical Dispersion.

It's a particularly good time to get a new L1® by the way.

ST

Very rare we're on an elevated stage so I'm leaning toward buying the L1S.

After ST's remarks here and contacting Bose, I ordered an L2. Looking forward to using it at our next gig.

Hey Wayne,

Congratulations! You're going to love it. And you'll like being able to use your T1® without having to use the power supply. Do you still have the ToneMatch cable? It was in the bottom of the box the T1® came in.

If you can't find it, you can use an ordinary network Cat-5 cable.

Please tell us how it goes at your next gig.

ST

Any idea what the Tone Match cable looks like. By the way, how come the power unit is no longer needed?

Hi Wayne,

It looks like this.

Close up of the connectors.

If you still have the T1® box, lift up the cardboard insert. The cable is probably in the bottom of the box.

  • This cable carries both the audio from the T1® to the Model II Power Stand  and
  • the power from the Model II Power Stand to run the T1®.

In a pinch, you can use computer network CAT-5 or CAT-6 cable.

ST

Well, this looks interesting. Now, the hunt begins ......  where did I leave that cable that I looked at 100 times and said' "What the heck is this for?"

Hi Wayne,

Bose Support can sell you one.

Thanks, I'll look around for it and if I can't find it I'll get a hold of them. My L2 has shipped already; PJ at Bose had originally told me it might be a couple weeks so this is sooner than I expected. We have a gig coming up in a couple of weeks so it'll be nice to have it there

Set up the L2 in my basement and hope to use it this weekend at rehearsal.  I am really happy with the sound and  comparable portability versus the Classic.

When I couldn't find the T1 connecting cable  I did as you suggested, I contacted Bose. PJ set me up with a new cable. Bose customer service continues to be the best I've ever encountered.  I wasn't even aware that my T1 could go into the unit for power and sound. Am I right in assuming that we could plug in a Yamaha mixer into the analog input?

That's great!

They're great, aren't they.

Yes. Pan all the inputs hard Left. Connect the Left output to the Model II Power Stand.

Settings on the mixer.

Yamaha MG82CX

Yamaha MB82CX

The output side is ¼ inch jack Tip-Ring-Sleeve and the input on the L1® is ¼ inch jack Tip-Ring-Sleeve so use a cable like this.

1/4.

1/4" TRS Balanced Patch Cable (audiopile.net)

L1® Model II Analog Input

Model 1S Analog Input

  1. Set the Trim control on the power stand to the 0 (zero) position.
  2. Connect the audio source to the Analog Input
  3. Adjust the volume of the audio source to the maximum output without distortion.
  4. While playing the source, increase the Trim level so that the Signal/Clip indicator glows green or yellow.
  5. If the Signal/Clip indicator glows red, decrease the Trim level so that it glows only green or yellow.

All set?

I believe so and a big thanks.  I'm going to forward this to my duo partner so he can read it too.

ST, I haven't forgotten that you asked for a post after using the new Bose but just a couple of days after that post I injured my C6 neck vertebrae. It's healing but two months and I just started playing tunes this week. Veeerrrry slowly and short sessions. Have a gig at the end of the month that I think we'll pull off and I'll post about the new L2 after that!

Oh Wayne,

I'm so sorry to hear this.

Thanks for letting me know.

Please feel better soon.
