My search for a good amplified tone is a never ending story. I find the ToneMatch patches for electric bass not that useful, so the latest adition is an EBS ValveDrive DI I use to inject some “organic life” into the ToneMatch. It makes wonder for the “authentic feel of a bass amplifier”, and still using the benefits of the ToneMatch, like compressor.
My NS CR4M electric upright works very well with the NS patches/tonematches, so that goes straight into the mixer.
The acoustic upright then, there is the challenge. I have the David Gage Realist, the original “under foot cupper foil pup” on a full bodied Bulgarian upright with a thunderous and wonderful tone. It has a 3/4 body and a 4/4 scale neck, so it has a BIG and beautiful tone, also acoustically volume strong. The first thing I do is putting my Avalon U5 between the Realist and the ToneMatch. It makes wonder! I set the U5 flat, no eq.
Then, on the ToneMatch, I use the three band eq to cut some 6 dB of the low end, then use the parametric eq as a notch filter and “zoom in” the problem frequencies by first narrowing the Q value to some 1/4 of an octave and first boost max. Then i play the strings and sweep through the whole eq register until it starts to feedback. There, at that point, I cut the eq almost to the bottom. Voilà! A nice full bass tone almost sounding as my bass’ acoustic tone. And - I can play at killer volume with no feedback.
What are your tricks? 
I was using the MXR M-80, but just got the Ampeg Scrabler DI for Christmas. So, looking forward to trying it out.
