That’s an interesting thought but I don’t think the gate will affect the tone of your voice. The gate does as the name suggests, “opens and closes” the signal path from your microphone to the amplifier. The basic idea is to stay closed until there is sufficient volume (good sounds) to trigger the gate to open, and when the volume drops off, the gate closes.

One application for this would be to silence background noise. Perhaps you have noticed that a microphone, left on and unattended may pick up the sounds of people talking or moving about nearby. A gate, set properly could silence the microphone. When a stronger input is present (someone singing directly into the microphone) the gate would open and allow the sound through.

With that out of the way, let me ask - do you have any recordings online?

What kind of microphone are you using?

What kind of music are you performing?

Hi again Katy Jay,

I remembered that BobD-at-Bose had recently written something about this, and sure enough, he had written to you.

Hi Katy Jay,

Welcome to the forum! There are a few things that could contribute to thin-sounding vocals; here are some suggestions to try to improve the sound:

The first thing to do with any source you connect is to adjust the T1’s trim control. This will get the strongest signal you can into the T1. To set the Trim, follow these steps:

1. Set the Master, Channel, and Trim controls to zero.
2. Sing or speak into the microphone at the loudest level that you would during a performance.
3. While speaking, slowly turn the Trim control clockwise until the signal/clip indicator glows green or just starts to flash yellow. If the indicator flashes red or glows steady red, turn the Trim control counter-clockwise so the control is as high as it can be without the indicator turning red.

Note: If you are using a condenser microphone that requires phantom power ( 48V), depress the Phantom power switch before adjusting the Trim control.

Next, select a ToneMatch preset for the microphone you are using. The presets customize the channel’s sound for the selected instrument or microphone. If your specific microphone model is not listed, try the first few microphone presets, which are for general use.

Try adjusting the trim and preset without any active effects. Once you get a sound you’re happy with, adjust the zEQ to tailor the sound more to your liking. A little compression might help to thicken up the vocals as well.

If you have any questions on how to adjust settings on the T1 or if you are still unable to achieve a sound that you like, let us know. Also, feel free to contact us at the phone number below and we can assist over the phone.

Thanks!

Please re-check your trim settings. We have some notes about that here too.

Please tell us more about your music and perhaps we can give you something more specific.

What kind of music are you performing? Where, and for whom?

Hi ST and thanks for replying.
Everything seemes fine with the sound until I took it to a large venue for rehearsals. The backing was excellent vocal volume superb, just that the vocals sounded a touch flat (no presence) and not a nice rich sound. I have a line 6 microphone and am playing around with some different microphone settings again tomorrow. My voice is Mezzo soprano.
I have backed the eq settings right back now and althouth the tinny sound has gone, the vocals still seem flat. I live in N wales

Hi Katy Jay,

It’s hard to know exactly what you are hearing or what your voice sounds like, or what part of what you are hearing that you don’t like.

I have a suggestion you can try just for the sake of hearing what your voice sounds like if you add or remove certain frequencies.

If you get a feel for this it might help in getting the eq set to an ear pleasing sound that suits you.

Start with a preset that matches your mic if available, if not choose one of the handheld mic presets. All effects should be off or bypassed.

Set zEQ controls to flat, that would be with each control Low, Mid, and High set to 0dB.

Select Para EQ and turn the Level to -10 dB. Set Width to 1.00oct.

Now while singing (without music) turn the Freq control through the full range of your vocal. Maybe start very low 80Hz or so and gradually move to 10kHz.

Listen closely to see if there is a point where you like what you hear better than what came before or after. If you hear something you like, then make adjustments to the Level and/or width.

If nothing sounds good to you this way, repeat the exercise with the Level set at 10.

By playing with the Width, Level, and Freq. you can discover what part of your range is enhanced by either the addition, or removal, of certain frequencies.

We are all different and what works for one may not work for another. We hear ourselves differently than our audience does. Hopefully we eventually settle on a sound that is a good compromise between what we hear naturally and what the audience would hear if we performed without amplification.

I hope this is fun for you and helps in your effort to discover your sound.

O…

Well first two gigs under my belt with the new system and all I can say is OMG!.The sound we managed to achieve was fantastic. One gig was a huge holiday park packed to the rafters. Crowd noise was loud but the L1 and 2 B1`s just cut through the noise beautifully.
What was incredible was the system was really cranked up, but was not annoyingly loud close up and was still loud 60/70 foot away. Everyone said the sound was superb, thanks for all your help guys.

Hi Katy Jay,

Congratulations on those two gigs.

You are describing the L1® that I know and enjoy at every gig.

Good for you.
