Help regarding noise management

Hi,

I have small inn with 5 rooms and 80 seating restaurant.  I also have 450 square metres decking outside with 2 marquees 12 metres X 12 metres.  There is a caravan site adjacent to the inn and the environmental health have threatened to put a notice on the property if I have further events.  Its ridiculous as the levels recorded adjacent to this property were 49DB to 54 DB.  I have had to get a lawyer and noise specialist involved.  The councilor is understable about how ludicrous this is.  The EHO are doing measurements in a weeks time to decipher what the perimeter noise should be.  I think the result will by 50 DB or just below.  My noise consultant said that there is an attenuation of 39 DB so music played from Marquee at 89DB is about 50DB at the perimeter.  He suggested I put further fencing up, have multiple small speakers in the marquee to give the same effect.  The have suggested that I have electronic drums.  The whole thing is draconian,  I went to a sound shop today and they suggested the L1 Model II system.

On one side is the caravan park and other side is a farm.  If I face the Lii away from the caravan park does that get round my problem.  The F1 Flexible Array was interesting to see as well.  I want to have various bands and DJs to be able to play.

I think I will attach the noise report which shows pictures of the issue and video clip of one of the events.  I basically want the noise to go in the opposite direction of her property.  The Inn is already in the way.

If you have any other solutions that will permananently fix my problem I would love to hear from you as I am a bit fed with this fiasco.

Hi Ashi,

Thank you for joining the community. This is an interesting challenge. Thank you for all the information. Lots of food for thought.

I thought I saw an L1® Model II in the video. What did you think of it?  Did you experience either of these?

  • To reach the same sound pressure levels at the perimeter, you could run at a lower stage volume.
  • Running at the same stage volume, the sound pressure levels at the perimeter were higher.

I read through the report. I had an opportunity to discuss your situation with some design engineers in very general terms.

The suggestions included a distributed system, creating a cardioid bass array using F1 subwoofers, taking advantage of the L1® Model II for its relatively low drop-off in volume over distance.

I'd suggest that you contact the Bose Professional office in the UK.

Hi Ashi,

Welcome to the forum from me too.

I also noticed a Model II in the video. What I also noticed was the presence of real acoustic drums which can sometimes be a problem with neighbours. Also the lower frequencies (bass) especially when discos are being held. I know from a friend who used to play drums in his cellar how far away they can still be heard clearly.

I like this from ST:

"The suggestions included a distributed system, creating a cardioid bass array using F1 subwoofers, taking advantage of the L1® Model II for its relatively low drop-off in volume over distance. The whole thing is draconian"

You also wrote "He suggested I put further fencing up, have multiple small speakers in the marquee to give the same effect.  They have suggested that I have electronic drums."

The sound coming from the L1's shouldn't really be much of a problem (although they really do carry much further than "normal" loudspeakers). I see the real problem lying in the lower frequencies. That's where the greatest energy is sound-wise. As these frequencies tend to be omnidirectional, maybe staggering the subs around the room/marquee would help. This way you wouldn't have to run higher volumes from one place to cover the area you want. I'm just juggling around with a few thoughts here. I know from the place where I used to work that soundproofing for the environment can be pretty expensive.

Maybe this is of some help, I don't know. I do understand, however, that the problem will not just go away and has to be faced and dealt with. I will be extremely interested to hear how you manage to deal with this and wish you every success in finding and implementing a sound policy and system which keeps everybody happy.

By the way I've visited your Homepage. Impressive, and in a nice part of the world. I can almost taste the single malt from here in Germany.

(My edit was to correct cardio bass to cardioid bass)
