I did a corporate event earlier this week for 58 guests in a reasonably small room.
They had a (very good) live entertainer using a pair of Mackie 15" subs and SRM450 tops, and he played L O U D.
I was set up directly opposite him on the other side of the dance floor. When he finished his nearly 90 minute set, I had a complaint from one of the guests that I wasn’t loud enough at the back of the dance floor. That would be the side closest to where the live entertainer was.
61 guests. I had the L1 and dual sub set up running absolutely full crank, to the point of nearly over driving it.
I think this girl had been dancing right in front of the very bright and very loud Mackie system. I had my van parked just a few feet away through a door and could have set up a 2nd system in minutes, but decided against it for the sake of the rest of the guests.
Strange night that one.
What did the rest of the guests think, any comments from them?
Full dance floor (around 60 people) and she was the only one complaining. I was working for an entertainment event management company, so they got the complaint before me. They also wondered what was wrong with her, but had to respond somehow as she was one of the decision makers…
You can make some of the people happy some of the time, but you can’t make all of the people happy all of the time. You did a good job. 59 people were happy
Maybe she thought you also were using the Mackies! As she couldn’t hear anything coming from them she thought you hadn’t cranked things up enough!
She was probably one of those people that believe quantity is better than quality. To her load meant better. I would think that if you had dual L-1’s and quad B-1’s it would not have been an issue. But given that is a decent system that he owned and able to sound good and load. I can see where she might have thought that.
Anytime I have an event with over 300 possible dancers. I will always bring extra sound. The Bose are great but they do have limitation. To me you where running a half a system versus her full system. I have had a similar complaint about 4 years ago but in a crowd of over 450 people. I added extra sound and no problem. The bodies where sucking up my sound. (
Expectations.
Her ears had become numbed by the earlier loudness at that end of the room, and so she was expecting a similar loudness.
“She” is Proof positive, there is “one” in every crowd.
O…
Few & far between are those who complain about L1’s, you did a great job Nick!
I had a live performer say it wasn’t loud enough once. I ask him if he could hear it good, and if it still sounded great in the back of the room when he was back there singing. He agreed the sound was great all over the room. Some people just like loud even if that also means distorted. I think not having to be loud to cover the entire room is the best thing about the L1 systems.
