We just started playing together in January 2008, and have been using L1 model II’s from day #1. It has allowed us to really refine our sound and feel very comfortable and unified in our parts and arrangements at a very early stage.
Linde: Vocals, acoustic guitar
Tim: Electric guitar
Mike: Bass Guitar
Ryan: Perucssion

The current recordings on our myspace are live two channel room recordings of early practices on the L1’s.
Please ask us anything about the rig…

Hi Mike
Can you tell me what T1 Preset your Guitar player uses with the E609Silver?
I use the same Mike (called E606 in the UK) and I find the “Miked with an SM57” far better than the “E609” setting?
I do know Sennheiser do an E609 that has a different charachteristic than the 609Silver/606. and the T1 preset isn’t specific about which one it is for???
so just wonderin
Cheers

Hey Sparky,
The mic used in the preset is indeed the e609 Silver. Tim uses the same 'e609' preset on the T1 as well.
In the USA, all you can get is the e609 silver. Sennheiser's higher-end mic in the 9-series is the e906.
Ill try to find an older e609 and compare them. From my recollection using older ones the new silver one seemed basically the same.
What are you hearing? Do you like our 'miked amp 57' preset with a 57? It's possible we just have differing opinions on mic'ed amp guitar tone. In that case I can help you get where you need to go using some EQ.
Mike
Hi Mike
I tested both the miked with 57 and the E609 presets. I found the 57 a much brighter sound than the E609 which by comparison sounded muddy to my ears.
my testing may have been flawed so here is how I did it:
I couldn’t test with the L1, so I tested using the mic into the T1, then the T1 into My Mac and I recorded the Same guitar phrase on a different track against a Drum backing track.
The Mic is held 1 inch away from the grille using a foam surround I made.
I started testing with the Mic dead center on the speaker, then move 1/4 out, then 1/2 out then 3/4 out towards the edge.
I recorded the same phrase at each position for each of the 2 presets. The 57 setting was much better - to my ears when I A/B’d the recordings.
After further fine tuning I ended up with the mic slightly less than a 1/4 of the way out from the centre. Incidentally my amp is a 1X12 Cornford Carrera - 5W/8W handwired . output valve is changeable between a 9 pin (8W) and 8 pin (5W) valve (by switch) it comes with an EL 84 and a 6L6 / I am currently using a mullard EL 84- sounds sweet.
I’d appreciate any comments/suggestions
Cheers
Sparky,
The T1’s presets for both guitar amp mics were done with the mic dead on center, on axis.
Although the T1’s presets port very well over to the recording world, you only truly hear the presets the ‘way they were meant to be heard’ through the L1 itself.
That being said, whats important is that you just use your ears (as you have) and adjust to the situation. Moving the mic around the grille of the amp, both in location and angle, is a powerful form of EQ. There’s no wrong way to get a sound that’s right for you.
My main advice would be to warm your amp up for plenty of time and baby the Mullard EL84 Those puppies are expensive! (especially here in the USA)
Good luck,
Mike
Thanks Mike
That’s really interesting that the Presets were done with the Mike right dead centre on the speaker, that would explain some things. And I may go back and re-check/tweak.
And you are right about the mullards, I have 2 old ones I got off Ebay years ago when I ran an AC30 - but never used them cos I needed 4. We gig about 80 times a year so it’ll be getting some use (Only had the Cornford amp about 3 months).
One Mullard is fine, the other works ok when fully warm but whilst it is warming up it crackles a bit ( warm the amp up on standby for at least 5 mins but when I switch from standby it still crackles for a minute or 2 then settles down) - so it’s probably on it’s last legs. Needless to say I carry a spare JJ with me to gigs
Thanks again.
