L1 Model 2 PCB Module

My church has 6units L1 Model 2 and 8 units B1 Bass that installed about 6 years ago. To my record almost every year one unit broken down and need service which turned out that we have to replace a NEW Power Module which is not Cheap.

Currently I have again experienced the same problem but this time the Tower unit is still working but the B1 Bass does not work - however the local service shop again recommend us to buy and replace the Power Module.

My question is as follows:

1. Is the Bose L1 Model 2 is very sensitive with the Electricity current and Voltage? Is there any internal fuse installed that possibly protect the unit?

The way we understood the voltage and current of our electricity source is quite normal

2. Is it Bose international policy to buy and replace the Power Module instead of repairing any damaged Component?

Kindly provide us the answer and possible solutions as your Bose Power Module is quite expensive herein Indonesia.

Thanks and best regards,

Hi Buyung,

First, sorry for the trouble.

1. Is the Bose L1 Model 2 is very sensitive with the Electricity current and Voltage? Is there any internal fuse installed that possibly protect the unit?

Regarding sensitivity, no, not particularly. However, we do recommend using a surge protector. There is no user-serviceable fuse or protection.

2. Is it Bose international policy to buy and replace the Power Module instead of repairing any damaged Component?

As a rule, not to my knowledge. However, Bose factory repair also does board-level repair in favor of component-level repair in some cases.

Aside from the surge protector suggestion, the only other suggestion I have is to turn the equipment off when not in use. Heat is an enemy of electronics in general, especially for prolonged periods of time. If equipment is left on 24/7 this could contribute to wear and tear and ultimately failure.

Thanks,

Hi MattS,

Thanks for your prompt response and would like to having your further information on the following:  What kind of Surge Protector is best with our Bose Power Module? Would a Voltage Regulator/Stabilizer is enough?

Concerning the heat you mentioned, we do believe it would not be a matter as our Bose L1 are in the Air Conditioned rooms and it only operates for 2 hours in weekdays and on Saturday 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. Only on Sunday it works 4.5 hours in the morning and another 4 hours in the evening. We always turn it all off when not using it.

Is there any your authorized service shop close by to our area (maybe Singapore) which is able to do the component repair or accept Used Power Module to be Exchange as we currently keep four (4) Power Module which believed could be repaired somehow.

Thanks and best regards,

Please read http://toonz.ca/bose/wiki/inde...Power_Considerations for surge protector and conditioner information. I agree, it sounds like heat 24/7 or otherwise is not an issue.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for your technical source references on the surge protector. It is good to knowing that Bose has put an internal protection for this electricity surge but in the other hand strange that I should experience a four or five broken down of the power module. As you explained before one reason is because of the heat but I do believe it should not be the case.

Do you think dust collection might be the possible cause as all of our L1 sets are just put on the floor in our church where if not being used all the doors are opened and obviously exposed to low severe dusty environment.

Is there any SOP for cleaning the instrument knobs etc. ? If so, would an electrical component contact cleaner be okay and how often?

In regards of your service center reference, I will check and revert.

Thanks and best regards,

Hi Buyung,

It’s possible dust could be a contributing factor. Cooling fans are located in the front handle area behind a grille you can check for functionality by playing signal through the L1 and feeling for air movement. Something light in weight like a tissue placed near the fan area should move if the fans are working and the grille is not obstructed with dust. Excess dust removal with the aid compressed air or a vacuum could be beneficial.

No there is no recommended potentiometer cleaning procedure. Exercising the knobs periodically without cleaner is OK.
