Im retiring my Classic that I use with my Mdl 2 for larger venues, in favour of a somewhat lighter unit [ah, the joys of aging!] The L1S seems like an affordable option, so here
s some questions…will I be able to match the levels on the two systems together, given that I never have to run my 2 louder than 1 oclock on the Tonematch? I know there
s a 125 watt difference between the two systems but, as we know, its not totally about wattage and, perhaps with the L1 s
improved B2 module, this might give me equal levels, allowing for having to run the S two or three notches louder to pick up the slack, as it were? Also, are the L1S` array speakers the same size and handling capacity as the Mdl 2s? Thanks as always for any and all advice!
Hi Zatoichi,
I’ve got both Model 1S and Model II and I have run them side by side.
The two systems sound very similar. You notice the difference at a distance. The Model II projects farther than the Model 1S because the Model II Cylindrical Radiator® is twice as long. The same applies in a comparison between the Model I and Model 1S. Although with the Model 1S you will enjoy extremely-wide horizontal dispersion that you have with your Model II. The difference will be in the distance covered.
How big are the venues where you would want to take both systems?
ST
Hi ST!
The biggest venue would be a 400-seat local movie theatre where Ive used my MDL 2 and Classic together achieving good coverage/volume with, as I said, the T1 at 1 o
clock and the Classic around 3 on Chl 3. If I can replicate this with a L1S, even with the distance discrepancy, that`ll be fine.
Hi zatoichi,
In that local movie theatre…
What is the greatest distance likely to be from the Model 1S to someone you need to reach in the audience?
Is the stage elevated?
Is the seating raked?
The Model 1S has 12 drivers in the upper section (and none in the lower section). If peoples’ ears are below the belt-line of the Model 1S, they may not hear it very well.
The stage is indeed elevated with raked seating and Im a bad judge of distance so I would have say it would be to the back row of the stalls in an average size movie theatre. That being said, this is a venue I do maybe once a year, so it
s not that big of an issue. All other venues are a lot smaller, 75% of which don`t even have a stage, so I would think a 1S would work nearly all of time since the drivers only in the upper section would approximate having speakers on a small stand and thereby project well.
