This may be slightly off topic, but I would really appreciate some advice. I just did a theatre show with both my L1 systems and got a few comments that, although the overall sound was great, the low end was really overwhelming and making the punters jawbones rattle! The problem is I
m doing eclectic material [big band jazz, rock, country] using tracks, and the bass varies tremendously from genre to genre, as in loud electric rock and upright acoustic jazz. Even though I`ve levelled all my tracks to a basic standard volume, on certain tunes the bass is too much. My question therefore is, how can I somehow get an even low end response for all my material without having to individually tweak each tune for whatever venue, which would of course be impractical not to mention time consuming. HELP and thanks!
No way around that, in my experience.
Compression doesn’t work, and trying to EQ level everything in the studio is tedious, and usually doesn’t work that well.
I’ve had the biggest trouble when trying to blend new recordings with old.
The sound just varies too much.
I have always just tried to remember which songs have that extra bass, and be ready to tweak with a filter that rolls off everything below 40-50hz at the push of a button.
I guess your using MP3s so that means you don’t have separate control if you were using midi tracks. Also in the theater were you on a hollow wood stage? This can effect the bass a great deal. If so get some long cables and move the subs off the stage.
Thanks guys…useful advice and yeah,it was definitely a hollow wooden stage so now I know.

I often eq my Tonematch so that with the preset for “loud music” off, the bass sounds perfect on the higher bass tracks. I leave it on bypass until I start a low bass track. Then I just push the one button to turn off the bypass, and my bass gets pumped - until I push it again.
