Hi,
Right now I’m DJ’ing using a Vestax Spin or Vestax VCI 300 MK II with either Itch or Djay, the software that comes with the spin.
For my audio, the Spin and the VCI 300 MKII have built in mixers obviously. I’m just going from the RCA main outs on the back of the Spin or VCI 300 direct to 2 x L1M1 using RCA to XLR cables.
I have a gig where I need to have two live wireless mics working at the same time.
I have a Shure wireless mic, but only one.
The Spin and the VCI 300 only have one mic input. So, unless you guys recommend something else, it seems like I have two options.
Buy something like this: this
Or, I could get a small mixer and buy one more wireless mic and just have each mic on its own channel and have both channels live at the same time.
If I were to get a cheap simple mixer, what would you recommend?
Should it be powered or unpowered?
I’m trying to think out how the lay out should be to achieve the ability to have two wireless mics and the spin/VCI 300 hooked up to the mixer and then from the mixer to the powered speakers.
Can anyone shed some light on how best to do this and what equipment you would recommend?
Thanks!
Go to your nearest Guitar Center and get yourself and 2 or 4 channel Behringer board. From $49 to $69 dollars. I have a few of these and they do a darn good job when I need to add just a little more.
Not the cheaper route but I’d say pick up a good used Denon X500 (or new if you can afford it) & a new Line 6 XD-V70 wireless system. For a bit less $ the V30 should be nice as well.
I have both the X500 & two XD-V70 Mic systems & really like them.
Here’s just one unique benefit of both:
A) The Denon X500 has 8 inputs than can be assigned to any channel on the board via the matrix knob.
B) The Line 6 operates in the 2.4ghz range which means that you don’t need to worry able the FCC selling off the frequencies of you new system in years to come… unless they outlaw Wi-Fi!
I would prfer 2 separate mics over the dual setup so I would not be down both if one needed service.
Right now, without having to buy a mixer, you could continue to run your the Vestex split Left and Right to channel one on both Model 1’s and the wireless mics separately to channel 2 on each Model 1 and control them with the remotes.
Or you could use a small mixer for the mics and run it into the Channell 2’s or run the Vestex and the mics through the mixer with one ¼” (Left and Right) to each Model 1 for all of it.
Many on this forum have recommended musician mixers over DJ mixers for use with the L1. Others say DJ mixers work fine once you get the gain staging worked out but Behrringer mixers have never been big favorite here.
I don’t use a Vestax but have been using a Mackie 402 VLZ-3 ($100), as a simple mixer, and a Mackie 802 VLZ-3 ($200), as something a bit more versatile, with my Model 1’s for over 4 years. Both provided a very clean sound without a lot of hassle. Neither is rack mountable though.
You can run the mics alone or with the Vestax through them as well to simplify the hook up to the L1’s with a pair of ¼” jacks.
oh man, i wish more of you had replied before i went out and bought something.
i ended up getting the mackie 802-vlz3.
i set everything up with the two mics going to the bose l1m1s and then from each bose out to a qsc k12 to a ksub.
sounded great.
then i was just contemplating the complexity of determining all the right signal and gain and volume levels there are between the different equipment.
then i almost had a meltdown that i absolutely needed a t1.
i used a t1 once and it wasn’t fun. i’m sure it’s fabulous, i just like knobs.
next time, i’ll be more patient and then check back here before i meltdown.
i’m sure i’ll end up with t1 sooner than later.
next job: sending the output from the bose to the QSC wirelessly!
how do you set all those levels?
Dan
