New Copy-Cat sytem out

Looks like Fender has a one-up on Bose. They put out a system called the EXPO that may
give are L1 Compacts some competition finally in the portable affordable line-array
market. I thought it was a new Bose L1 model as they almost look alike until you get
to the bass module. Some of the features included 7 3"drivers 1 Neo-tweeter with a
horn also built into the pole and Fender says one tower can handle up to 300 people.
Now that part of it I have a hard time believing. The system was shown off at NAMM 2014.
Come on Bose we can’t let them outshine the original portable line=array developer.
Is there anything new coming out of NAMM from BOSE?

Those steel posts that mount the array to the sub look like a recipe for disaster. I’ll bet they would either bend in transit or break the housing in the array or the sub within a year.

And the most important thing, to me, that the L1 has over any of these other array systems is the T1 which makes it all work so well together.

Still, I too am looking forward to the next iteration from Bose, and you can bet it’ll be good.

At twice the weight I’ll stick to my Compact.

Looking at the Youtube videos of this new system, it’s just another of the many systems recommended as a two-unit “PA” in-front-of-the-band, they use floor wedges to monitor.
Probably because of the larger, probably lighter, speakers in the (non-articulated) array.

The sound isn’t amazing, similar to a Passport.
The 8-speakers, 2-woofers is a nice bump up though.
I wish Fender the best, but I wouldn’t call it a one-up on Bose just yet.

Hi drumr,

It’s interesting you mentioned the Fender Passport. My understanding is that the same man who was instrumental in the design of the L1, was also instrumental in the design of the Passport.

Makes me wonder if he might have been consulted in the development of this system? At least he would understand the patents and know how to design around them.

Of course this is pure speculation.

O…

Kind of off this topic, but I’d like to see Bose remake a power stand that would allow us to use the sticks from the model one… Shouldn’t be that hard.

It’s easy to understand how those who might have failed Classics or Model I systems would wish to be able to continue using the speakers, but I doubt that Bose would ever accommodate that desire. I wonder how much life is really left in the speakers. The speaker warranty is five years and I suspect that most systems that have failed out of warranty have many hours on them.

However, … There might be a secondary market for some entrepreneurial types to utilize those Classic and Model I speakers in more permanent installations. With a Bose controller for the MA 12 it should provide a reasonably close system EQ curve for the L1. Might be able to put together a bargain system by shopping in the used market.

And they'd make money off that how? Wink

First off is you read in past posts pretty much all problems have come from the power stand. Second I would think for $500-$600 per newly design power stand they could do OK.

I’m sticking with Bose for anything P.A. There’s no going back to anything else. Nothing else compares!! I get a lot of compliments on the sound and looks of the Bose speakers. They look and sound like no other speaker out there. I also love the portability and weight as well. There will always be copycats, but only one Bose!!
