All the stage sketches I’ve seen show guitar/bass amps being used. My 3-piece rock band (guitar/bass/drums/3 vox) runs everything thru two L1 Model II B2 systems with no external guitar amp speakers used. All signals (including kick & snare mics) run thru a Mackie mixer to the Tone Match module (vox-ch 1, guitar-ch2, bass-ch3, snare-ch4. The kick runs to separate sub cab for max thump. The guitarist uses his amp head as a preamp only (it’s a complex Roland modeling amp). It sounds amazing and I get to control the overall volume from my mic stand. Anyone else try a similar set up? Seems a shame to use this great system for primarily vocals only.
Hi Fndrbss,
Thank you for joining the Forum. Great to meet you.
I haven’t used a typical back-line external amp at an L1 gig in hmmmm, probably over a decade.
The reason so many of the Sketches show back-line guitar/bass amps is because the Sketches are usually documenting the beginning of the discussion when people are just considering the L1 System.
Please tell us about your music.

Thanx for the quick reply. I actually just purchased a second L1 Model II B2 today and will debut the two system layout tomorrow night. Just geeked!
Hey there Fndrbss,
Totally geeked for you.
I noticed that you were considering cross connecting the two L1®s. Yes you can do that, but I think you might like it better if you don’t. Try it both ways.
Have fun tonight, and please let us know how it goes.

Hi Fndrbss,
welcome to the forum.
It’s always good to here about Bands going completely L1 (i.e. no back line and just the L1 sound). It’s the most “homogenuous” sound I’ve ever heard because everything carries to all parts in the location equally. If you use a back line for guitars and an L1 for vocals, the you’ll only find one sweet spot in the room regarding the instruments (if you’re lucky).
I joined a Cover/Dance band in 2000 and they’d been using preamps for the guitars for a few years (Marshall JMP 1, a really versatile unit). With a minimum of 2.5 KW per side it sounded pretty awesome and the stage volume level was pretty low. We did use a back line of amps set to clean taking signals from the preamps for personal monitoring (we had roadies to carry and set up the gear). The overall coverage in the locations did not, however, compare to an L1 system.
I’m really glad that you’re ecstatic about your sound.
