Thoughts for the people suffering in the severe flooding in the North West of England

As I used to live in the Lake District in England, the torrential rainfall over the last few weeks with the terrible flooding has left me speechless. My deepest sympathies go out to all those who are having to cope with life there at this time.

Take care everyone,

Tony (originally from Heversham - near Milnthorpe - in Cumbria).

That is nice of you to say Seagullman, we here in the Midwest, USA, are having our troubles too.
It seems that it’s not over yet either, my little town is on the Illinois river, and it’s rising fast, a new record hgt is expected.
But many have had it worse than us, at this time.

I had never noticed that you are in Germany, it’s nice to find this new information, good to get to know you better.
Thanks for all your good help here in the Forum.
Hope you had a nice Christmas break.

Hi DrumrPete,

thanks for the nice words in my direction. I’ve been well aware of your posts since I first started reading the forum which was quite a few years before actually joining in December 2 years ago. I’ve also watched many of your videos, which I’ve enjoyed.

Regarding the flooding in England, I can watch what’s happening on a daily basis as I have satellite reception of english television, and when you see pictures and films of towns (and sometimes even streets that you know) it gives you a weird feeling knowing that you’re at home enjoying life and Christmas while others (including probably people that you know) are fighting an almost never ending battle against the seemingly unrelenting element of water, not knowing when it’s going to end, or how their lives are going to be affected by it in the long run. The village I come from hasn’t been hit up to now as it’s a few feet higher than river or sea level (the village is situated very near to an estuary and due to the area being hilly it’s been spared what’s happening in the neighboring village which doesn’t lie as high, and also has a river running through it). From what’s being said on the news, the flooding in the north of England must be the worst on record.

I wasn’t aware of the flooding in your part of the world, but I’ve just googled it. Some of the pictures I’ve seen are pretty bad and from what I’ve just read the worst is probably still to come.

‘Historic’ flooding in Missouri and Illinois leaves at least 18 dead

You know, Pete, we all complain and are unhappy when our system fails, or we can’t get the sound dialed in the way we’d like it, but that’s complaining on a very high level compared to what the victims of such natural catastrophes have to suffer. Years ago I saw boats on the road at the seaside resort I lived in for a while before leaving England, but that was during a high winter tide with hard winds coming in from the sea. That was bad enough for the people whose cellars flooded which included many flats which were at cellar level, but the tide went out again, the winds eased, the cellars were pumped out and dried. It didn’t take all that long (comparably speaking) to get back to normal. What’s happening now is catastrophic, changing many people’s lives for ever, and even costing lives in the process. This is why I started this thread. I know how lucky I am compared to all those out there who are much worse off than me. My thoughts also now go out to the people in your area whose lives may be changed for ever as a result of what’s happening now. I’ll keep an eye on that, too, now that I know about it.

My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone whose lives are at present being affected by flooding.

Take care, and try to help those who are less fortunate than yourselves.

Tony

My Christmas break was pretty good, thank’s for asking. I hope that your’s was OK too considering what’s happening.
