Video setup

I’m looking into investing in a video dj setup. What do you video dj’s recomend for projectors, screens and programs?

How are you planning to use it (Slide shows, music videos, custom made videos using a clients photos or videos, etc) and what types of events are you planning to use it for (Weddings, schools, corporate events, banquets, etc.)?

Actually I’d like to use it for a little bit of everything. I’m interested in music video djing, been messing with the virtual dj with the video mixing and so far really like it. I also would like to do slide shows too. Karaoke… I do all sorts of gigs, weddings, etc and work a lot in the bars too. So I am looking for equipment that is affordable, durable and fun to use.

It all depends what you what to do with the screen/projector.

Fill us in…

I want something where I can project from both sides and an affordable short throw… My idea is to play the old mtv videos, where I gig they are in love with the 80s and I found a bunch of videos of the 80s remixed that would be fun to use. This is an older crowd, and they can appreciate that stuff. I also do karaoke for them too… Anyway, I don’t really know too much about projectors or screens or video dj yet, so I am doing a lot of research. I just want to keep things with it simple, don’t need to get into video editing or anything complicated at this time… Actually jd I was looking at the projection screen you have, and it is a strong consideration. It seems to be the size that I need.

We have a Global Truss arch we use with a 10’ Lycra screen. We drape it and rear project on it.

We also have 37" and a 21" flat screens we made gold picture frames for that we attach with Velcro. The 21" works perfect as a big digital photo frame at weddings. We load it with the B&G’s engagement photos (etc) and place it on the guest book table.

Even 50" flat screens start to look small in even medium sized venues so a giant rear projection screen can be seen better in that environment. However, projection screens have trouble in bright environments and you need some space behind them for the projectors throe.Ours need more than 7’ to fill the screen. In hind sight a shorter throw projector would have been worth the extra bucks.

I have used animoto.com to create some great music video slide shows.

Setting up a big screen is labor intensive so we charge accordingly. I even find myself discouraging clients from choosing the giant screen. Keeping it simple is always best, IMHO.

That’s a cool idea, Lou thanks for sharing the picture.

Hey Lou,

can you share a pic of what your L1 is sitting on??? oh and without the skirt Smile

I now have something else in the works for this. Something much lower but high enough to get the job done. I will be posting that when I get the shorter skirting.

Meanwhile, Check out this thread.
