Connecting Canon XA40 to T1

Hello,

What's the best way to connect Canon XA40 camera to T1 tone match? I am using T1 with Model II and B2 Base.

Hello shaime,

I took a look a the Canon XA40 manual, and the best way to record external audio is to use the handle attachment that fits on top of the camera (should be included with the camera.)  This handle has two XLR inputs, along with a stereo 3.5MM input, and switches & dials to adjust the operation of the inputs.

To use this with a T1, you would require a 1/4" TRS to XLR-M cable from the T1 to the camera.  On the camera, you would pick either XLR 1 or 2, and set the "LINE/MIC/MIC 48V" switch for that connector to "LINE".

On the T1, you have a choice to make -- whether to use the 1/4" Main Out or the Aux output.  Using the Main Out will give you the same signal as the one going to your L1 Model II via the ToneMatch cable.  Your master volume will control both simultaneously, so you'll have to test to see if the volume controls on the camera will compensate.

There's a chance the Model II might be really loud, and the camera's recording very soft, or vice versa.  In this case, you'll want to set up the Aux on the T1 so you can control the signal to the Model II and the camera separately.

Does that help?
