Dante Firmware Update Failed

Dear Kind CSD Folks,

I had a long and involved exchange with one of our US contractors on Saturday. The system had a Dante card installed in an ESP1600 and ESP880 and is intended to pass audio between the two chassis. After getting all components on fixed IP’s in our normal default range, the Dante firmware update failed using 4.3.1. We moved to the “fum” utility in the bin folder and that process also failed (tried running it as administrator but I don’t think that has been an issue here - just with the IOCard Program). I then had him try fail-safe mode, but of course, the devices were not in that state so it would not initiate the process. I had him try checking the override type box and designated the redline DNC-R devices in the drop down window and that failed. So assuming I had crashed and burned with all my efforts, I told him I was out of ammunition and would need to ask someone for help. In the meantime, I said “you can always test it to see if it will pass audio”. It does.

So - if a card tells you it needs to be updated in Dante properties and you try, but it fails, what exactly does this mean? Considering it is passing audio and seemingly functioning correctly, was it already up to date but triggered an update message? Is the firmware installed when shipped still functional over the long term? Where do I go with this one next? I’m a little confused. (Okay, I’m a lot confused, but you won’t be able to help with most of that mess). <smile>

Best regards,

Dave

I hate to ask this one Dave… but I will anyway- at any point in there did you do a hard power reboot of the two devices? Maybe the firmware actually took but wasn’t registering until the power cycle (I’ve seen this before).

Hi David and Arno,

Thanks for the follow-up responses. Just to make sure no stone is left unturned, yes we did boot and reboot multiple times - all the way across the floor and back again. <smile>

I’m pretty sure that what happened the first time he tried was that he was changing IP addresses on both devices at the same time but not designating a difference between the two in the last octet. When I had him connect one at a time using Dante Controller, the Dante cards showed up with the same address and I think he may have tried a firmware update with both online with the same address. We fixed the addressing issue and tried to do the FW update one at a time to no avail.

He is going to be on-site again today and I want him to double check some things – most notably to make sure that his wi-fi is totally disabled – not just unassigned to the router. I thought I had him do that, but it may have been lost in my poor choice of words walking him through the process over the phone since he was a little less familiar with addressing details in his PC. (It was a long and involved process getting his Bose stuff on static IP since he initially connected one device with a different router and we had to reconnect the original router to find out where it disappeared to). If he launches Dante Controller today and gets that cryptic message about duplicate addresses being found on the network instead of the actual device view, he obviously has two paths of connection and thus, fum is confused.

Killing off wi-fi while updating firmware is my best (and only) guess right now. I’ll let you know after he calls later today.

Thanks, guys.

Best regards,

Dave

Hi David,

I just did the same test:
ESP1600 /w Dante (APIPA)
EPS880 /w Dante (APIPA)
Network switch Cisco SG-300
PC CSD 4.3.1 (IP 192.168.0.50)

Updated both ESP’s at the same time.
After updating a message is displayed that:
"The upgrade will take effect when devices are next restarted. Please restart upgraded devices now"
I didn’t power cycled the devices and Dante properties still showed the old firmware and the “Update firmware” button.
But after power cycling both devices the new firmware was displayed and the “Update firmware” button was removed.

Where there more / other devices on the same network?
When you say they connected with the devices on fixed IP, I assume the Dante IP setting for both cards was still on “obtain an IP address automatically (default)”?
Did they power cycled the devices after updating?
During / after updating, did they received an error message?
If you have additional information, please let us know.
