Electronic pop in channel 1

Hi all - I’ve been a very happy user of the L1 model 1S w/B2 bass module and 4 channel T1 tone match mixer for the last 3 years.  Channel 1 for Neumann handheld, channel 2 for Sure SM58, channel 3 a summed XLR mix from a Nord piano, channel 4 for Ukes with pickups (my wife plays a regular uke and a banjolele both with pickups and uses a guitar cord with an on/off switch to change between them while playing) - I also play base uke on some songs and that’s wired directly to the 1/4” input on the LI base.    So that’s the setup - been working great since day 1.

This weekend, while playing we heard almost a “shotgun” sounding pop in the middle of a song.  Nearly soiled myself 🙂   I worried that I might have pinched a cable somewhere in my setup so after shutting everything down, I rerouted everything to be absolutely sure that wasn’t the case, turned everything back on, and noticed when I touched the mic cable on input one (near the input on the mixer itself) the movement re-created the “pop” sound.   So I assumed it might be the mic cable as it was probably 10 years old.   I swapped it out with a newer cable (these are XLRs for a mic that uses phantom power) and got the same problem when turning the system back on.   If I don’t touch it, no pop - except for that one time during a song where nothing was being touched.

The other threads I’ve read here so far talk more about popping when things turn on or off, or other problems that don’t sound like mine.   I called support and understandably with COVID-19, they’re closed and the online support center replied to my issue there that they can’t support me online at this time.

So - I’m hoping this community may have some ideas for me to explore.   It seems like a physical/contact issue with that channel - doesn’t seem to happen in other channels that I’ve heard so far.   Wide open to your thoughts and suggestions.  Thanks everyone!

Hi Steve,

Thank you for joining the Bose Portable PA Community. Welcome!

I'm sorry you've got a problem with your T1 on channel 1.

Try the phantom power button. If you turn it on/off/on do you hear the popping sound?

Try a different microphone in channel 1. Do you still get the popping sound?

Try jiggling the cable connector - and pushing it in/out/in/out a few times. Does the sound still persist?

ST

Thanks both for the welcome and advice.  Will try each of those and report back.  The mic in channel 1 requires phantom power to operate but for this test I can swap it out.   Thanks again - more tomorrow.

Steve

Great!  Tried all of your suggestions.  The phantom power button doesn’t pop when quickly turned on/off.  I did notice that when I disengage it and wait about 5 seconds to re-engage it, there is a less shocking pop sound but not the same sound I was hearing before.  I then put a different mic in channel one and got no popping sound at all.   But noticed that when plugging back the original mic in to channel 1 I wasn’t getting popping anymore either.  Perhaps the in and out of the cables helped?

at this point - it’s not popping. I’ll keep an eye on it.   Thanks again for the suggestions!

Hi, Steve.

Thanks for coming back to tell us you got things working.

You've eliminated the phantom power as an issue.

You're probably right.

Hey, now that the popping sound is behind you, please tell us about your music.

Thanks,

Sure - thanks ST!

Here’s a link to the 3rd in a series of “Hope Shows” my wife and I have been Facebook live broadcasting for our friends.  We’re hackers but having fun and hoping to bring a little light during these times.   The audio quality isn’t great - it’s just recorded on an iPhone while the other iPhone is broadcasting then we upload it to YouTube.  We’re playing everything through a single Bose unit - and I’m tempted to get a second for stereo (the Nord is amazing as is but even moreso in stereo) but for now - this suits us well.  We jam with other friends stuck in the 70s and someday envision touring the US in our RV when we retire and doing this for nursing homes and the like.  We’ll see.  Enjoy and thanks for asking!

Hi, Steve (and Sue).

Thanks for the link. Nice harmonies and you've got a nice selection of songs for shut-ins.

You WILL LOVE STEREO on two L1 / T4S combo - it is absolutely AWESOME!

Thanks ScubaBadger - so tempting!!!

I currently use an L1 model 1S with tonematch port and a B2 bass module.  For the stereo process - would I be ok with another L1 model 1s with a B*1* bass module and a new T4s or T8s mixer?    Just want to be sure I’d be able to connect it all in stereo as I’m imagining.   Thanks!

Yes, T4s with two L1’s is awesome in stereo.
