Hello, long time listener, first time caller.
Trying to figure out a tap tempo vocal delay with the T4s. *Not a fan of TC Voicelive or Mic Mechanic products for vocals, too robotic, processed sounding. I have two questions to hopefully get the ball rolling:
1. Is there a way to slave the T4s delay tap tempo function from the center knob to an external source?
2. If not, could I run my vocal into Ch 1, send to Aux 1 or Aux 1&2, through a Boss DD-7, and back into another channel input? What might that look like for cabling, impedance matching, and sound degradation (bal v unbal, stereo v mono)?
Thanks in advance.
Hello DanielSwitch,
The T4s does not support external sources to engage any of its functions, such as delay tap tempo.
You can route vocals from any of the channels via Aux to an external device and back into another input. All the T4s jacks support balanced audio if you use 1/4" TRS cables. However, since the Boss DD-7 is an unbalanced device, so I'd use 1/4' TS cables, not any longer than necessary.
Use the trim control for your mic channel to properly gain-stage the input signal so you get a robust signal without clipping. Great gain-staging video here.
Use the Pan/Aux menu to send your mic channel's signal to your chosen Aux port (1 or 2.) Set your tap point on your mic channel to "Dry" and level to 50% (as a good starting point, then adjust the level to taste.) Turn down and mute the channel volume. Connect a 1/4" TS cable from your chosen Aux port to the DD-7, then another 1/4" TS cable back into another channel.
I chose "Dry" on the Aux send, to be sure the DD-7 doesn't do something weird with any ToneMatch effects. (If you decide later that you want to try it, choose "Pre" and make your adjustments on the mic channel and remove any settings on the return channel.) I'd also check the Pan/Aux setting for the other channels, to make sure you're not sending anything else to Aux that you're not expecting.
Turn down the return channel's volume then set the gain-staging for it. Then adjust the channel volume and add ToneMatch presets, EQ, or other effects you desire. Your ear and taste will be your best guide!
Does that help?
Thank you so much for the help. Your answer is what I was anticipating to some degree. It makes perfect sense. I have a few follow up questions regarding the balancing/unbalancing of signal. I am considering the DD-200 because it has built in tap tempo along with pedal on/off. It has mono I/o as well as stereo. Could I run my vocal out the tonematch aux 1 with 1/4”TRS, into the mono input of the DD-200, and again mono out, and then 1/4” TRS back into Bose channel combo input? Or do I have to use TS?
Hi again DanielSwitch,
The DD-220's inputs and outputs are unbalanced TS, so I'd stick with that. You could probably use TRS cables if you don't have any others, but since the DD-220 is unbalanced it just ignores the "R" and behaves like TS. The cable only makes a difference if devices at both ends of the cable are balanced.
Does that help?
