Input difference?

Hey guys,

I have a Bose L1 Compact connected to my Behringer mixer via the XLR cable.  I am using the microphone input (left side) although the manual suggests using the right side input. Is there any upside/downside to setting it up this way?  It appears to be working just fine. I use this mostly to listen to music played from my Itunes to the Mixer to the speaker, and also for karaoke. Any input would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Scott,

The L1® Compact Channel 1 is EQ'd specifically for vocal microphones. You may not be getting the best sound for your full range music (iTunes).

If you have a way to connect your iTunes to either RCA or 1/8 stereo, you can connect to L1® Compact Channel 2.  Set the ToneMatch switch to the Line Level setting (down).

Do you hear a difference when you connect your music to Channel 2?

If you prefer the sound when you connect to L1® Compact Channel 2, then get a converter from XLR to 1/4" Tip-Ring-Sleeve and connect your Behringer mixer to L1®  Compact Channel 2.

Hi Scott,

ST's covered just about everything regarding the connectivity of the Compact and how to use it best. Regarding what ST's suggested I won't repeat his tips. They're basically what I've said myself.

@ST I can't seem to get the link in the picture to work ("Click picture for more details.").

I will however address this:

Depending on which mixer you have you may already have a cable with the connections you may need for this. Some of the Behringer mixers have both XLR and 1/4" outputs. If you can tell us which Behringer Mixer you have (with a link to the manual if possible) we can have a look at that possibility. I find adapters OK but due to the extended length I find that they make the connection to the mixer more susceptible to damage. You may also find that an XLR (female) to TRS cable doesn't cost all that much more than an adapter.

If by Karaoke you mean that you're also using a microphone, then you could pan the microphone hard to one side (e.g. left and send that output to the microphone input (channel 1) on the Compact. This way you could make use of the Microphone preset on this channel. I'd leave the EQ on the Behringer "off" (usually 12 o' clock) to start with and make use of the Channel 1 EQ on the Compact. If you find that it still needs "tweaking" then by all means try it.

I agree with ST that anything apart from microphones sounds better through Channel 2 on the Compact, but when all's said and done it's your ears that have to decide what you prefer. Try out what we've suggested here (shouldn't take long), record the outcome if you can with a digital recorder (making a note of which set-up was used for which recording), and then decide which set-up you prefer.

Does that help in any way?

Tony

Tony, I have the XENYX X1222 USB. I was under the impression the XLR provided a cleaner transfer than the 1/4 inch which is why I chose that route.

Hi Scott,

thanks for the information. I was hoping that you might have the possibility of main outs both as XLR and TRS. This is not the case with yours. It doesn't really matter.

I'd buy an XLR female to TRS cable of the length that I'd need for the use. This means that the connection at the Compact end is not as high as it would be using an adapter which also means less risk of breaking anything at that end.

ST's suggestions with the connections for your iTunes device make absolute sense as the Compact sums the stereo signal to mono and you don't lose anything.

If you really want to use the mixer for everything you could see if your iTunes player will sum the stereo signal to mono for you. If it will then you'd pan the channel for iTunes to one side (e.g. hard right) and connect that via XLR to TRS cable to Compact Channel 2 set to line.

Should you decide to try out what I suggested in my earlier post (microphone into Channel 1 to make use of the microphone preset) you'd then pan microphones hard left (if you've panned music signals hard right) and connect via XLR-XLR to Compact Channel 1.

Just make sure that the side to which you pan your signal is also the Channel to which you connect your signal.

I hope that helps. I think it's probably up to you to give it a try. If you've got anywhere that you can try this out at gig volume it wouldn't hurt to do so. That way you'd probably be less nervous than trying it out at the gig location. That would normally also poe no real problems apart the the adrenalin that's generally coursing through one's veins.

Have fun trying everything out, and please let us know how it goes. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Tony
