The S1 Pro is designed as a multi-position PA portable system - check page 12 in the owner's guide for more info on using the S1 Pro as a monitor speaker.
Honest opinion here. It depends what you are monitoring. For our medium volume 2 piece rock band they are no where near loud enough. I have the speaker on a stand a few feet away from the singers head in rehearsal and that's the only way he can hear it. If it's on the floor in monitor mode he can't hear it (set to "non clipping" gain levels). I have it running out of one of the AUX sends on my T1. We use earplugs for rehearsal and I'm afraid it just doesn't have enough head room to cut through.
That said, when we used it for an acoustic session (no earplugs) it was amazing. I also used one for a small backyard wedding PA and it was outstanding! For low volume I think they are hard to beat. For anything louder I would suggest saving up a bit more and going with the new L1 Pro.
