L1 and Mic setup for a Cajon

We just started using a Cajon in on church worship team band. We mic’d it with Beyer M180 ribbon mic. We used the L1 preset Kick Drum w/Sennheiser 601. The tone was good, but we had trouble with feedback. Anyone had experience with a Cajon? Any suggestions for mics or presets?

Hi NewDay,

Could you describe the feedback?

Also - have you tried the KickGate

(click the picture for details).

There is a guy named David Enke in La Veta, Co. who installs pickups on various instruments.
His company is called Pickup the World…cool, eh?

While at his home a couple years back I played an electrified Cajon, it sounded awesome.
He might be able to help you out.
Would be much superior to a mic in my opinion.

Newday,

Here is The Link to the exact page for a handdrum pickup.
I’m going to order one myself for my Djembe.
I’ll let you know how it goes.

The feedback is a low frequency hum. And occurs when the mic is at a certain position inside the sound hole on the Cajon.
We do have a ToneMatch so we will try the KickGate setting. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the information. I'll check out the pickup.

Hi NewDay

This sounds like you are getting feedback at the resonant frequency for the Cajon.

I’m not sure the KickGate will help - it might.

The other thing to consider is using the ParaEQ.

Hey NewDay,

I got a hold of David at Pick-up The World, and we had a fun email exchange, what a great guy.
Humorous, helpful, and passionate about what he does.
I have a pickup coming.

Anytime you can use a pick up instead of a mic with an L1 you are miles ahead, it’s just plug and play easy.

Of course, fiddling with the T1 is a lot of fun too, so by all means do that too.

P

I just want to follow on on this. NewDay, did you solve your problem? How? (I have same.)

Drumr, did you get the pickup for your djembe? How is it? The cajon pick up you tried – did it have strong bass and “snare” response?

Yes I did get the pickup, but have not installed it yet.
I am hesitating to drill holes in any or my drums, and need to decide which one to amplify.
Will probably go with the least sonically impressive drum.

It sounded like a good quality cajon, only louder.
The pickup didn't exaggerate any particular frequencies.
Although not a big fan of cajons, his amplified one sounded great.
Personally, I don't think they replace a drumset very well, I prefer a djembe.
