Linking a mixer to t1 tonematch

Hi I’ve invested in a Bose l1 1s system with b2 and t1 tonematch. Can I go from my ref mixer into the tonematch then from tonematch to my l1

i tried it from my main out to channels 4 / 5 and it worked ok but want to be sure that’s the correct way as need the extra channels on my rcf

i know I can go direct from my mixer to l1 but doesn’t sound as good

also when I’m using my laptop direct into 4 / 5 on t1 it’s clipping red before I even turn volume up so do I need to reduce my laptop volume

thanks

Hello Ajcamilla,

Congratulations on getting your new system.

If you are using left and right main outputs from your mixer into your T1, then using Channel 4/5 a great way to do it.  If you are trying to run left and right main outs directly into the L1 using a Y-cable, that's why it doesn't sound as good.  The L1 expects a balanced signal, and using Y-cables for input generally mix left and right onto a single connector, supplying A) a stereo signal the L1 doesn't recognize, or B) shorting the left and right against each other with the possibility of damaging your mixer's output stage.

You mentioned using your laptop connected to 4/5.  Are you using a Y-cable to do this?  (Using a Y-cable to split left and right outputs is the correct way to do it.)  Yes, you probably do need to lower your laptop volume, and/or set your trim level (gain staging) on channel 4/5 first.  (Setting trim level instructions here.)

There is another option that is much simpler -- you can connect your laptop to your T1 using a USB cable.  The T1 has an integrated high-quality sound card.  (Setting up USB instructions here.)  You can either send the USB to Channel 4/5 (preferred, as you control it with the channel volume control and can apply all the ToneMatch presets, EQ, and effects) or directly to the Master out (in which case you will have no ToneMatch presets, EQ, or effects, and still have to adjust the laptop volume on the laptop.)

If you need to connect both your laptop and mixer to the T1 at the same time, you have a couple of options:

  1. Connect the laptop to 4/5 (preferably by USB) and the mixer to channels 2 and 3.  This way you'll have individual control of every input.
  2. Connect the mixer to 4/5, and connect the laptop via USB.  If you route the USB to channel 4/5 as well, its controls would affect both the mixer and laptop, i.e., no separate adjustment of the two.  (If you route the USB to Master, you will only send it straight to Master and have no processing control other than Master volume.)

Does that help?

Will this setup (USB to channel 4/5) work for zoom streaming using T1?

Hello shaime,

Yes, this will work fine for sending audio from your PC to your T1, to your master out and on to your L1, S1, or whatever speaker you are using.

You could also use the T1 as a source to broadcast your input to Zoom, although you will probably need to keep your speaker volume low to avoid creating a feedback loop or echo that your listeners will hear.  Your computer will probably automatically choose your T1 as a sound source, so you will need to ensure that you choose the correct sound source (like a USB mic or the PC's internal mic) in your PC's sound settings.  Otherwise, Zoom watchers won't be able to hear you!

Does that help?
