Please Help Me Decide - Model I or Model II

Trying to decide which L1 configuration would be best for someone who DJs middle school dances exclusively. I’ve read enough on this forum and others to know that there are some who frown on the L1s for these types of events. However, I also know that I’m getting tired of setting up and striking my conventional speakers and subs and I’m ready to make the change to something lighter and with a more sophisticated sound. And, I’ve read enough to see that many of you are doing very successful youth events with the L1 system.

So, the decision to change has been made. I need to protect my back (and ears). The question is Model 1 or Model 2. I plan to keep the rest of my rig as is. Virtual DJ controlled by a Denon HD2500 and a Denon X500 Mixer. With that, it seems to me that I really have no need for the T1. If this is a correct assumption, then I would imagine that two Model 1’s would suffice along with multiple (4-8) B1s.

Now, before I pull the trigger, I’m hoping that some of you experienced folks will either confirm my assumptions above or tell me where I’ve gone wrong. And, for anyone who favors the Model i for my application, would your opinion change if I said that I am considering adding karaoke to these school events?

Thanks in advance to any and all advice. I’ve really appreciated the civility and wealth of knowledge shown in the discussions on this site.

- System Naming

I have used 2 B-1’s with single bass since their inception for all my DJ needs. Only a few times usually outdoor gigs did I feel like I should have the double bass. I have not used the newer model but they look a little lighter and are supposed to have a better sound dispersion. Are they worth the extra $, I don’t know. My system has been bullet-proof and Bose has great customer service. I use the T-1 because I do a guitar-vocal thing with a Bose Compact also. Hope this helps, Randy

Yes you are right two L1 Model 1’s with eight B1’s will work great! You might even be able to get away with four B1’s depending on how bassy you want it to be. Occasionally I DJ youth dances for about 100 kids of all ages & I do a karaoke hour for them toward the end of the night. My system (dual L1’s Model 1’s/ eight B1’s/two Packlites) has been great at high school dances with 350-400 kids.

If you go with the Model 1’s I’ll give you some tips on how to get the best sound out of them using you X500 mixer (I have the same on). Let me know.

Randy and JD,

Thanks for the confirmation. Maybe start with 4 B1’s and add more later, if necessary.

JD, thanks for the offer to help with tweaking the Bose. I’m sure I’ll be contacting you once I make the big switch.

Weight Vs Money is but one consideration in choosing between the Model 1 and Model 2.

This topic has come up more than once. There are a number of helpful threads you might find with key words searches. Keep in mind these are opinions and opinions can vary, as opinions often do.

Here are a few.

Model 1 or Model 2 for DJ’s

Should I or Shouldn’t I

M1 Vs M2

Thank you, Lou. Good reads. I think my questions re: the M1 vs M2 have been adequately addressed now. Just a matter of when to order now.

I purchased the M1 (2 L1 and 4 B1) and I found the base of the L1 very heavy and cumbersome. So I had this great discussion with ST here:

And switched to the M2.

Compared to what?
Compared to a Model 2 or a Compact it is cumbersome but compared to what most of us used before the L1 hit the street, the Model 1 is a flyweight luxury. I still have a problem paying that much of a premium for that little of a difference in weight and “cumbersomeness” but that day may come along soon.

Well - I am only 5’8" and yes - the M1 is lighter than my Mackies, but they were much easier to carry. The Base of the M1 is very awkward to drag up and down stairs and in and out of the car.

There is no doubt that M2 base is more compact, stylish and lighter (11 lbs) than the M1 base. But, I’m with Lou D on this issue for now. My current rig consists of 2 EV ZxA5s (50 lbs each) and 2 RCF 4PRO 8001-AS (123 lbs each). So, by comparison, the 35 lb M1 bases are going to seem featherweight to me.

OneManBand, I appreciate the link to your other thread. When I’m going to spend a significant amount of money, I generally want to get the latest and greatest model. So, I was a little hesitant to consider the “old” M1 over the newer “sleek and stylish” M2. But, in this case (and supported by the affirmation from a few others here)I think I will be well served by the M1 and will save a significant chunk of change in the process. I just hope I do not feel the need to “upgrade” to the M2 in the near future. Sounds like you are pleased with your decision, though I did not read a follow up after you put the M2 into service. I assume all went well.

Thanks guys.
