Recording with Bose t8s and Zoom H4nPro

Need some suggestions.  Have been searching the forum like crazy but still confused.  We have 4 vocals.  A mic'd Cajon.  3 guitars.  Bass guitar and Mando.  Everything except Bass and Cajon run through the t8s.  I want to record our sessions.  I can get everything except the Bass and Cajon from Aux out to the H4n.  I can get the entire room mix with the H4n with its external mics.  But I would like to run the Bass and Cajon through the ts8 to the h4n along with the rest of the direct recording.  I was thinking that if I buy a mic mixer (https://artproaudio.com/product/promix-three-channel-microphone-mono-mixer/) and combine 3 vocals that would free up 2 channels on the t8s for the bass and cajon.  Would that be the best option?  I also have another small mixer.  Could I output the bass and cajon to my extra mixer and input it to Aux In on the ts8?  Would the output captured from Aux Out to the h4n include the entire mix?  What do you suggest? Thanks : )

Hello tbytes,

Either solution is viable, but I would opt to run from your other mixer into Aux channel 9.  (You only need to use Aux channel 10 if you want the Bass and Cajon panned differently in the stereo image.  See the "stereo" option below.) You won't get the Tonematch settings on the Bass and Cajon, but I would rather have them applied to the individual vocals than the low frequency instruments (my personal preference -- others may see that differently.)

Are you recording in stereo or mono?  If mono is fine, pan both instruments left on your other mixer, and run its left output to Aux channel 9.  Use the Pan/Aux control to ensure channel 9 is panned center -- will send this signal through to both the T8S L and R main outputs.  This control also sets the level for the signal coming from the other mixer.

Stereo:  You may want to place those two instruments (each with lower frequency ranges) on different sides in the mix, especially if you are performing live.  Pan them left or right on your other mixer, and run its L and R outputs to Aux channels 9 and 10 on the T8s.  Then use the Pan/Aux controls to pan channel 9 left and channel 10 right, as well as set each channel's levels.  This will maintain the stereo signal through to the T8S main outputs.

Technically, the Art mic mixer option would work, but is dependent on your mics being equal, and your vocalists all usinging exactly the same EQ.  I'd keep the money in my pocket and use your existing extra mixer.

Does that help?

I appreciate the reply.  I am recording DIRECT from the Bose t8s "Aux Out".  Will the Cajon and Bass guitar that are connected to the Bose t8s "Aux 9" be part of that mix or is it only what is sent to the eight channels?  Or are the Aux 9/10 ONLY sent to the tower speakers?

And yes.  Running Mono.  Not sure I understand why I pan the signal on the mixer. Is that so I can get the entire signal out of the mixer in one 1/4 cable?

Hello tbytes,

You are correct, Aux in channels 9 & 10 are only sent to the mains, so they will not be included in the mix.  Also, panning the signal on the other mixer is to ensure getting the best signal.

Are all four of your T8S main outs already in use?  (I was just wondering why you used Aux out rather than mains.)  You could also try running from the 1/8" headphone out jack on the T8S to the 1/8" in jack on the Zoom.  That would get all channels, and the volume on the headphone jack is controlled separately from the master volume.  Just a thought.

I think you have a great understanding of what you need!

Does that help?

You have been so helpful.  I am really grateful!! I am only using one of the main outputs I think.  Just the right Mono Out to my Bose L1 model 2 Tower.  Can I connect the H4n recorder to the Left Mono Out and capture the whole mix including the Aux IN???  See my pic.

Hello tbytes,

If you are panning everything center on the T8S, then yes.  Panned center, your signal to both the L & R 1/4" main outs will be identical, including the pass-through signals from the Aux ins 9/10.   (The XLR main outs could also be used simultaneously with the 1/4" outs, with no degradation of signal.)

I notice in your picture that you drew arrows from Aux out 1 & 2.  You won't need that connection, just one cable from the L main out to the Zoom.

Does that help?

Yes!!  I think I will send the bass guitar and Cajon to the small mixer.  Small mixer panned out to Aux In 9 of t8s.  Then R and L MAIN XLR of t8s out to the Zoom h4n pro recorder.  Have I got it straight? THANK YOU!!!!
