S1 Pro channel 3 has too much bass

I have found that the 3rd input has too much bass

Hi Hugh,

What is your input source for the S1 Pro channel 3?

Do you have any kind of tone control at the source?

Thanks,

ST

As ST asked, are we talking about the Aux Channel?  If you're connected via Bluetooth or Line In to the Aux/3rd channel, bass and EQ control are going to need to be adjusted at the source level (PC/Mac/Phone) or whatever device you're outputting to the S1.

This issue seems to keep resurfacing... users keep running into the issue I highlighted quite a while ago in my "turn down for what" thread. When streaming songs via Bluetooth some of them (that have deep bass) can distort in the low frequencies... The more I have used the S1 Pro system, the more I have come to the realization that the S1 needs some bass reduction (occasionally) to avoid low frequency distortion on certain tracks.

Perhaps Bose should have incorporated Eq knobs on channel three as well this way the user would be able to dial back the bass when need be... it is rather difficult to dig into the settings of ones smart device to change the bass output every time there needs to be an adjustment.

I would suggest (if it is possible) for Bose to make a firmware update to fix this issue. If not... perhaps offer another piece of hardware that your smart device syncs up with that would give the user some Eq or processing power... and then the S1 Pro would sync up with this device... or perhaps it would utilize the 1/8" jack on channel 3??

Hey jdbass I’m back! Honestly I just gave up on the problem. I use powered subs to filter low frequencies and alleviate the s1s when I need to or use Spotify’s EQ to DRASTICALLY take out bass and turn up the gains on my subs. A little annoying and inconvenient on the fly. I’m only masking the problem though. I agree with everything you said. Some kind of limiter/dsp/EQ in channel three would be... perfect. It’s heartbreaking because the tweeters in the s1 can really sing and achieve great volumes but the port noise is just... ugh. It’s holding the tweeters back. Can Bose make the S1 compatible with Bose Connect and incorporate an EQ/EQ profiles that way?

Listen to Camila Cabello - OMG. Alotttt of port noise before clipping light. It was embarrassing.

It’s not all negative though. When listening at normal volumes (LOL) I really do enjoy the deep resonating bass the s1 gives.

Hi ST,

I use a zoom recorder for backing tracks and spotify /bloothtooth.On the other two channels there is a bass reducer.

There are EQ apps for smartphones, tablets and laptops that can adjust the tone ahead of channel 3 BlueTooth or 1/8" input. Ric

From the iPad there is an EQ but  according to Apple and specially me it is very subtle indeed and basically not very effective. It would’ve been a very simple process propose to have a base control on third channel as it does on channel one and two .  And I doubt it would cost very much to do it. I’m surprised that Bose  could not foresee this problem and rectified it before it occurred. Shame that.

Apart from that, S1 seems to do the job very well

I really like the ability to have a little speaker with a battery that works anywhere. I even used it in the back  of the car which sounded fine.

Have you tried other graphic equalizer apps from the app store on your iPad?

No,but I will give it a try

Perhaps this might be another thread.

I was looking at the L1 Compact Wireless and wondering whether the Bluetooth channel on this rig has the same problem with the booming bass?

If so, I think Bose needs to find us some relief

Just my $.02

The L1 Compact doesn't have a built-in Bluetooth channel, but you can get the L1 Compact bundled with the Bose SoundTouch Wireless Link Adapter.  You can connect that to L1 Compact channel two through the 1/8" stereo input.

The L1 Compact has deeper bass capability than the S1 Pro system. It responds better to booming bass.

ST,

Just bought the S1 and it`s a cool speaker.

I'm glad you like it, and thanks for taking the time to tell us how you feel.

But it`s not cool that the speaker with bluetooth on CH3 will deform on the low`s for more then 50% of the pop songs with a little bass, this when spotify with the S1 at 50% volume.

Yes, you're hitting the maximum volume (bass) the S1 Pro system can handle for these tracks. We've had another conversation here that may interest you. Bass over excursion or port noise - Turn Down For What?

Will there be an firmware update to change something if posible, then the speaker would be really great, now its a bit of a disappointment when turning the volume up.

I understand. We tested the S1 Pro system with a wide range of applications including live music, music playback with various styles of music, public speaking, and more. We tuned the bass response for the best overall performance for the widest number of people.  We continue to listen to customer comments here and through all channels. We know that most of our customers are extremely happy with the sound of the S1 Pro system.

We have explored ways to change the response in the low frequencies. We found making the S1 Pro system more tolerant of heavy bass diminishes the overall performance in other ways.  We don't have plans to change the sound profile of the S1 Pro system through a firmware update.

Dont have examplesof songs, but i think when you turn the volume up you should notice..

If you need more overall volume for music playback you need a bigger enclosure. The L1 Compact and the larger L1 systems may be a better choice.

I’m now at ease to finally read some closure on this topic. I thank you guys for at least doing some testing. Maybe on the next model there can be an outdoor mode switch of some kind, a low end frequency cut or even a “top end” switch like an 812

You are right, it`s just the maximum of the speaker, what we also found is the quality of the bluetooth streaming i very important. If you use the S1 bluetooth channel, and the quality of the stream is low, the bass will deform easy. If the stream quality is high, deformation will occur at a lot higher volumes. Overal the speaker is great for outdoors and sound a lot better compared to all JBL/soundboks portables... Very clear and relaxed type of sound.

To fix all this, i just bought an B1 sub with A1 packlite (and a rolls sx21), that is a great solution for outdoors party music with a couple of friends..!!

What do you mean by low quality Bluetooth? I wasn’t aware that there was different quality levels... How does one get quality Bluetooth results?

@jdbassentertainment.com , as you know, there are higher and lower quality recordings of an original source. A source that was originally recorded at levels that were distorting, would also distort during playback. Compression during recording will cause dynamic distortion, if used too much. For example, if I had an older Samsung Galaxy S2 recording the same live performance at the same time, distance, location an height as my current LG G6 the sound quality and video quality would be superior. The audio spectrum analyzer that @ST displayed showed the YouTube audio at acceptable levels on the peaks of the low note. I hope this helps. A graphic EQ in the Bose Connect app would be nice. Something similar to a Boss GE 7 would help, if the recorded source was not distorted.

Oh I see... you were speaking about the source material quality. Thanks for clarifying.

I just bought a bose S1 for pleasure because My JBL Boombox missing a bit of power for me.

In bluetooth, Wow for the Bose S1 music of the 70-80-90 years. super powerful and clean but when you fall in the recent music ... it loses a lot of power , need to lower volume even without red clip light it is necessary to lower the volume to the point that it does not play harder than the BoomBox ..

It would really good to add an adjustment in the Bose software ... because the EQ in android spotify is very not good

I love the S1 so far but it a two different world between 70-80 music for power vs today's music with bass too deep.

My advice is to NOT use Bluetooth on the S1Pro with any music that has significant bass and/or kick drum.

I first noticed it on some funk tunes I was playing. Blown out bass and extremely sharp ride cymbals.

You get much better performance if you connect a cable directly from your device to the s1pro. I get better separation and more volume.

I currently use a 3.5mm to xlr on channel 1 or 2.  I found it better than using the 3.5mm to 3.5mm. Adjust the tone match switch to your preference.

I also own an EV Evolve 50 line array PA. The Bluetooth on that works much better than the S1Pro.

It’s clearly something in the Bose software. I get the impression there won’t be any changes forthcoming from Bose. Such is life.

I really dig my S1Pro. I wish I could use it more but the Bluetooth problem is a real Issue. Unfortunately  I leave it home more often than not in favor of the EV, even when I don’t need the volume.
