Given the choice to run on batteries or AC power is it always better to not use the battery. Or is it sometimes better to run the battery down. What provides the longest battery life?

Please use the battery any time it's not convenient to use AC power. That's the way Bose engineered the S1 Pro to be used.
Lithium-ion batteries have a shelf-life whether or not you use them. So you may as well use yours when it suits you.
Unlike many recent consumer devices, the battery in the S1 Pro can be replaced. This means you don't need to be overly concerned about the way you use (or don't use) it.
Unlike earlier battery technologies, lithium-ion batteries don't have a memory effect and you don't have to discharge them occasionally. You can charge them up as often as you like regardless of how much or little charge is left in the battery. Any time the S1 Pro is connected to AC power, it is trickle charging the battery. The system is engineered to manage that process for you while optimizing and protecting the battery.
I understand the desire to maximize battery life through the way we use/charge/handle/store the battery. The S1 Pro and its battery are engineered to be used and like all batteries, they are consumable. Fortunately, they are easily replaced.

The battery will have a finite number of recharge cycles, just like your laptop. Everytime you use the battery then recharge it you will have used up at least part of one of those cycles.
One of the huge features of the S1 is its battery. There’s no degradation of sound quality by using the battery power and it’s so convenient just to put it anywhere, plug in and start using it.
I just leave mine on a table top and use a wireless guitar connection so setting up and start playing takes seconds. It encourages me to practice more as a result. So use it on battery as much as you’d like.
