Serial Number for Date of Manufacture?

First of all - Congrats to all on a great forum.

I'm thinking of buying a used L1/M2/B2 system that's supposed to be 18 months old.  Is there any way of 'decoding' its serial number (or other method) to tell its year of manufacture, or how old the system really is?  Thanks!
