While we kept our SM58s as backup, we upgraded to the Beta58s several years ago. They have much more presence and punch and clarity than the 58s. Also, using them with a L1M2, we’ve never had feedback issues. For our style of music, they e been great. Thanks for the article.
Would the Beta58 be better for a mobile DJ? Making announcements, etc.
After using the Beta 58a my trusty SM58 quickly became my second mic! The 58a - to my ear - sounds way better on the S1 and the L1M2.
The SM58 gets very muddy in the lower frequencies when someone gets close to the mic... this is known as the proximity effect. Although Beta 58a bass frequencies also increase when the singer gets close to the grill the mic sounds much more musical in its low end reproduction. The SM58 seems to have a more open top end which can also lead to feedback issues. Not only is the Beta 58a better at regecting feedback, but it also seems to have a larger sweet spot.
I think for a mere increase of $50.00 there is no reason not to upgrade.

Yes for the same reasons I listed above.
