T4S to add more channels to a T1 with L1 Model 1S with B2

I currently have a Bose L1 1s w/B2 module and T1 ToneMatch….I would like to add more channels. I know there’s the T8S available but have read bad reviews. I considered buying another T1 or T4s to daisy chain to add more inputs. What are the pros and cons and how do I accomplish this. I don’t want to break the bank but love the Bose sound and ease of use.

I’m also currently trying to use a Taylor guitar with ES-2 system that doesn’t afford the volume that I get with my older Taylors…should I be using a Direct box in conjunction with the T1?

Thank you so much

I have a T8s and I love it.  I had seen the reviews but most of the complaints seemed like operator error to me.  I play my Martin D-38 direct through the T8s using the tone match and it sounds great.  Same with my banjos and ukulele.  I am also using two L1 model 1s with a B2 bass and two B1 Basses.  I love the sound so I am adding two F1s  for large venues.. Anything requiring more than that always has a professional sound company.  Good luck whatever you decide.

I like hearing positive reviews...really looking at that t8s, was just concerned since I've had no issues with the T1. Thanks

Any sound loss by not using the dedicated digital cable?

You are welcome.  It was really hard for me to step up and pay the premium for Bose equipment.  After playing 40 plus years with an adequate PA I finally did it and it is an amazing difference.  Now, I sound as good in a 200 seat venue as I do in a 2000 seat venue with pro sound.  It sure makes singing a lot more fun.  Good luck.

Hi, Mike Arway.

What inputs do you have?

e.g.,

  1. Vocal microphone (make/model)
  2. Vocal microphone (make/model)
  3. Taylor guitar with ES-2
  4. Mandolin with LR Baggs Para DI
  5. .
  6. .
  7. .
  8. Stereo backing tracks from a computer

I know there’s the T8S available but have read bad reviews.

There have been several firmware updates for the T8S (and T4S).  Many of the concerns that were raised in reviews have now been addressed.

I considered buying another T1 or T4s to daisy chain to add more inputs.

Yes, you can daisy chain another T1 or T4S or T8S.

Your L1 Model 1S can support two ToneMatch mixers. For example:

  • Two T1s
  • One T1 and one T4S
  • One T1 and one T8S

What are the pros and cons and how do I accomplish this.

Please tell us about your inputs (question above), so we can talk about the pros and cons in a meaningful way.

As you may know, the big difference between the T1 and the T4S/T8S is

  • The T1 is a mono device
  • The T4S/T8S are stereo devices
    • This is relevant if you will have two powered loudspeakers (e.g., two L1 Model 1S systems)

Are you thinking about getting a second powered loudspeaker? This could change the cost/benefit discussion about getting another T1 compared to getting a T4S or T8S

Here's an article that discusses the differences.

We discussed your Taylor guitar with the ES-2 system in this discussion.

T1 with L1 1s and B2 module - using Taylor ES-2

Thank you so much

Mike Arway

Please reply to the questions above, and we can talk about your options.

Thanks,

ST,

1 - Taylor 814ce w/ ES 1.3 pickup / sometimes Taylor K24ce w/ ES-2

2- 3 Sennheiser e-93s microphones (using a 3-way passive splitter)

3 - Mandolin or Lapsteel through Baggs Para Acoustic DI

4 - Taylor 314ce w/ES-2 pickup

We play in small bars with more than ample headroom...the possibility exists for adding another L1 1s down the road.

also...when Input 3 is being used, input 1 isn't.

Hi Taylorman,

Thanks for the information.

Do you mean 3 Sennheiser e935 microphones?

3 - Mandolin or Lapsteel through Baggs Para Acoustic DI

4 - Taylor 314ce w/ES-2 pickup

If you're having a problem with low-volume using the Taylor 314ce w/ES-2 pickup - try running it into T1 channel 3. The LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI should be fine using T1 channel 4.  Note: You will need to set the trim controls on channels 3 and 4 after you swap the inputs. Play the instruments as loud as you will while performing and set the trim controls so you see solid green with occasional flickers of yellow.

If you add a second L1 later, it should be simpler to make the transition if you have a T4S or T8S because they have left and right outputs.

Back to your original question.

It looks like you have inputs for everything with your T1 (although I would split the three vocal microphones into separate channels for better control).  Are you planning to add more inputs?  Even if you aren't here's how I would approach things.  I've made an assumption that you have three performers who are both sing and play an instrument.

T8S

I group singers and their instruments in pairs but you don't have to do it that way.

  1. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  2. Taylor 814ce w/ ES 1.3 pickup / sometimes Taylor K24ce w/ ES-2
  3. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  4. Mandolin or Lapsteel through Baggs Para Acoustic DI
  5. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  6. Taylor 314ce w/ES-2 pickup
  7. Spare input for future use
  8. Spare input for future use

If you get a T8S,

  • You can control everything with one mixer
  • You won't need the T1

OR

T4S

Connect the T4S directly to the L1 Model 1S Power Stand using the ToneMatch Port (the way you are connecting the T1 now).

I group singers and their instruments in pairs but you don't have to do it that way.

  1. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  2. Taylor 814ce w/ ES 1.3 pickup / sometimes Taylor K24ce w/ ES-2
  3. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  4. Mandolin or Lapsteel through Baggs Para Acoustic DI

T1

Connect the T1 directly to the L1 Model 1S Power Stand using the Analog Input Trim. You will need a T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine Power Supply  because you will no longer be able to draw power for the T1 from the L1 Model 1S Power Stand

  1. Sennheiser e935 vocal microphone
  2. Taylor 314ce w/ES-2 pickup
  3. Spare input for future use
  4. Spare input for future use

If you get a T4S

  • Control over the sound is split across two mixers
    • Personally I don't mind this
  • You will still need the T1 and you have to get ToneMatch power supply

Alternative approach

Connect the T1 Master Output to the T4S channel 5 aux input. This would give you one master volume for all the inputs on the T4S.

One More Option (a second T1)

You can get a second T1 instead of a T4S.

  • If you can find a T1 it should cost less than a T4S because the T1 is discontinued
  • There's no learning required with a second T1.  Although the T4S is so similar to the T1, there's not much more to learn
  • A T4S/T8S has more options for controlling the tone (3-band ParaEQ. The T1 has single band ParaEQ

Does that help?

It does help...looks like I'm going with the T8....what cable do I need 1/4" trs to XLR or 1/4" trs to 1/4" trs? Where do I connect these? ....and thank you

I'm planning on going tomorrow to purchase
