Vocals sounding tinny when push at volumes.... help!

Hi There,

I manage to get a get vocal sound at home with my vocals but when playing at performance level they sound clinical and a bit toppy! I’m a high baritone and have quite alot of twang- basically a lazy tenor! lol. I’v take some top and mid off the vocal in the Zeq should I add more bass? never done this before with my dynachord mixer…

I like my vocal to sound rich and warm hence using beyer mics? can recommandations on vocal mics for mid to high range vocals to the L1. Read somewhere on here about the audix om6? i’m using beyer tg -x 60 at present and audio technica 5400.

Any feedback welcomed!

hi andrewdavid,

My first response to a report of “tinny” vocal sound when a relatively new user has a Model II system, is the remind you to check that your B1 cable has been “Snap-locked” into place when you get to the gig.

When the B1 is not connected properly, the L1 will sound like a transistor radio.

I myself have made this mistake a couple of times. The B1 cable must be secure by listening for (or feeling) the “click” sound when you twist the Neutrix connector into both the power stand and the B1.

If that is not your problem, then I would look at the mixer, do you have a T1?
If so, make sure you have either a vocal mic preset assign to that channel, or it is set to “flat”, before adding EQ.
Also check the that Parametric EQ is set flat.

hi there,

yes the b1 were both plugged in and locked. The backing tracks sounded fantastic crystal clear. The voice sounded tinny- but only at performance level. Maybe it was the reverb? which i’m using far less of now. I’ve read some other peoples eq setting and set the bass 2.2 Mid -8.8 high- 3.4 also cut 4500 at 3.4. sound better i have to say. Hope the gig tonight sound better.

good luck with that … i have ended up taking my model 2 back !
i got my dynacord back and my 4 EV speaker setup back , its like putting on an old pair of slippers … aahhhhhhhh
loads of headroom and great sound .
Back to loads of gear though ( !!
When i retire and just do lounges i will buy another bose model 2 (hopefully it will be a model 4 by then and be about 2k watts of power LOL )

Hi

EV speakers. I used to own EV ..swore by them for years. They are great speakers. But, I now own a Bose Model2 with 2 bins, and a Compact. I no longer own a dolly to lug them in. I believe Andrewdavid has to contact a Bose Rep to properly connect and set his EQ's and FX. Something is very wrong if he cannot get a nice fat rich mic sound unless it's his mic.

That's my two cents

Mid -8.8

That looks like way too much, especially for a frequency where much of the vocal resides.
I generally cut my high to -1.2, but mid is flat.
Are you singing with your lips brushing the mic, or are you a distance away?
Lips brushing will make a huge difference.

Chris, sorry to hear that the L1 didn't work for you.

hi David,i have had a few problems but getting there now , probably will be knocked by other users but i can not get on with the reverbs at all in the tone match, sorry but thats me,so i purchased a tc helicon create reverb unit, that made one **** of a difference, only problem i need to iron out at the moment is feedback,do you have trouble with it [feedback] tony

Hi there,

Thanks for all the input. I’ve only had a little feedback as I’ve changed the sensitvity on my wireless mic head…much better now. Not sure about using the speakers behind me for all gigs though as I find it too loud and not able to hear myself singing!!! My mic is a beyer opus 900 wireless with tg x 60 capsule. Great mic very warm but sounding a little harsh still. I think I might contact the bose guy for a little extra help. I’m not that keen on the reverb either on the T1. Does the Tc Helicon unit work well with wireless mics? I thought it was only for wired mics as it’s a pre amp? Maybe you feed back (westender) is due to too much gain for the unit and your reciever? I have thought about getting a voice live touch but need to know it’s compatable with wireless mic systems first.

I know that the bose system can sound amazing. It takes time though.

Hi AndrewDavid

I know I will catch some heat on this but I never have both my Bose Systems behind us. i have them off to the side and slightly upfront and turned in towards us just a bit. MOdel2/2bins/tonematch and Compact are both placed as described.

Also, you may want to cut your highs and mids and reverb brightness levels down also. I found that these three cuts really helped reduce feedback.

Just my two cents.
