Yamaha Tyros 4 Keyboard settings for the T1

I'm a one-man-band using a Yamaha Tyros 4 keyboard, through a recently updated T1, and then into a L1,M2,B2 combo.  I'm not 100% happy with the sound I'm getting - so, does anybody have recommendations, or have found the right T1 settings for the Tyros 4 keyboard?  Thanks!!

Please tell us what you hear and why that's not good for you.

What ToneMatch Preset are you using?

Are you using any effects?

Are you using a microphone?

Thanks,

ST

ST - Many thanks for the quick response.

1- The quality of the sound is kinda "muddy" and "foggy" and does not contain the same clarity/crispness and presence that I'd expect from the unit.  My Shure SM58 that's plugged into another T1 channel has a first class sound.

2 - I'm using General Keys Tonematch Settings

Reverb - Mix 34%  Bright 62%

Reverb Type - Type-Medium;  Time 1.75;   Bal 50%

Delay, Mod, Comp/Gate - Bypassed

ParaEQ - Level 0dB;  Freq - 1000Hz;  Width 1.38oct

zEQ - Lo - 13.4dB;  Mid - 11.6dB;  High - 11.4dB

Aux Mute

I might have overdone the "effects bit", but not understanding the full "effects" story, might not have helped.  I just thought there might be a simple combination of T1 settings for the Tyros 4, since it is quite a popular instrument.  Thanks again.

Hi, Limbo.

Thanks for all the great information.

How are you connecting the Tyros 4 to the T1?

  • Which output(s) from the Tyros 4?
  • Which input(s) on the T1?

Are you using stereo piano patches? How do these compare to other patches that are mono?

The first thing I would do is bypass all the EQ and effects in the T1 and work on getting the best sound from the Tyros 4.

See page 62 in the Tyros 4 Manual where it mentions reverb.

Okay - that suggests there's too much EQ and Reverb.

2 - I'm using General Keys Tonematch Settings

Press the Category button and it should show "Bypass"

Reverb - Mix 34%  Bright 62%

Press the Mix button and it should show "Bypass"

Reverb Type - Type-Medium;  Time 1.75;   Bal 50%

No change necessary.

Delay, Mod, Comp/Gate - Bypassed

Good.

ParaEQ - Level 0dB;  Freq - 1000Hz;  Width 1.38oct

Press the Level button and it should show "Bypass"

zEQ - Lo - 13.4dB;  Mid - 11.6dB;  High - 11.4dB

Press Lo, Mid High and they should show "Bypass"

Turn the Rotary Selector to Comp/Gate
Press the first button and make sure the display shows "Bypass"

Turn the Rotary Selector to Mod
Press the first button and make sure the display shows "Bypass"

Turn the Rotary Selector to ParaEQ
Press the first button and make sure the display shows "Bypass"

Aux Mute

Good.

At this point, the T1 should be passing the signal from the Tyros 4 through to the power stand unchanged.

How does the Tyros 4 sound now?

Work with the effects in the Tyros 4 to get the best sound you can and then you can tweak things.

Enable the ToneMatch Preset. (better or worse - bypass it if you don't like it)

Try zEQ - but just little changes - probably values of less than /- 3 dB for low, mid, high

Please tell us what you hear.

Thanks,

ST

Thanks again ST ….. I bypassed the effects settings per your suggestions - but the sound from the keyboard was very, very flat.  I just need the time to mess with the settings on the Tyros and see if I've set some things in there that are causing it to be that way.  Since I'm working back to back, I don't want to risk changing the Tyros settings too quickly.

By the way, I'm just running a 1/4" mono jack plug from the L/R output of the Tyros to the Input3 of the T1.  I use Input1 on the T1 for my Shure SM58.

Thanks again for your expertise and help - I'll get back to you as soon as it's safe to mess with the keyboard settings.

The general approach is to change one thing at a time. We want to stabilize the T1 (now done) and get the best sound we can out of the Tyros 4. Then see if there's more to be done with the T1.

Sure - that sounds fine.

I'll look forward to hearing from you.
